After Jesus was resurrected, He appeared to His disciples in Jerusalem. But Thomas, one of the twelve, was not with them. When told about Jesus’ appearance, Thomas said he would not believe unless he had seen and felt the nail print in Jesus hands and the wound in His side. True enough, Jesus appeared to them again after eight days, and invited Thomas to touch His wounds. Thomas then exclaimed, “My Lord and my God!” To which Jesus responded, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” The story of Thomas is interesting for many reasons, one of which being a demonstration of the disciples’ early understanding that Jesus is God. To date, the earliest record of this account is found in Papyrus 66, which is dated within the lifetime of the people who knew and walked with Jesus.
