Storks and Pines
BYAMBAJARGAL
Oil on Canvas
70 x 50 cm
2022
Inspired by his pleasant sojourn in Singapore and the towering trees around him, the artist depicts a treasured tree of Mongolia, the pine. Providing shade, timber and pine nuts (a delicacy), pines are also a refuge for storks passing through Mongolia on their annual migratory journey to Africa thousands of kilometres away. In Mongolia’s southern neighbour, a stork in a pine tree symbolises longevity; interestingly enough, storks prefer to nest in trees older than 80 years old.
“The trees of the Lord flourish ... There the birds make their nests; storks make their homes in the pine trees.” Psalm 104:16-17 (CSB)
