A reflection on life’s priorities in our busy metropolis: In the Bible, Martha and Mary were sisters of Lazarus. Martha welcomed Jesus and His disciples into their home, where Mary chose to sit and listen to Jesus while Martha busied herself with various preparations. When Martha expressed frustration, Jesus pointed out that Mary had chosen the most important activity and should not be faulted.
In Shih Yaw's modern visual retelling of the story, nine Marthas in yellow are depicted busying themselves with daily chores like hanging laundry, working on a computer, cleaning, and caring for pets and children. Mary, dressed in purple, sits quietly reading the Bible and engaged in the most important activity of all.
