The Chasm

This painting is inspired by Chuulut Gorge in Central Mongolia. The landscape on the left features the barren trees of autumn, synonymous with the human condition. Juxtaposing the left’s emptiness is the still-lush pastures, the lofty and unchanging mountains of the Rock of Ages. The lone figure opposite emphasises the isolation and immensity of the situation: an individual separated from the other side by a vast unbridgeable chasm — any human attempt to leap across, whether by ordinary person or Olympian, would be foolish and doomed to failure. The lowering skies tell of an oncoming storm and judgement, the final analysis of mankind’s deeds. However, there is a brightness of divine revelation coming through the ominous clouds; at centre, between the two sides, is a River running red.
“…you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.” Ephesians 2:13
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
