The night before the crucifixion, Jesus was in the garden of Gethsemane. The One who led a sinless life would soon bear the sins of the entire world in His body on the cross, and the sorrow and distress that Jesus felt was so great that his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling to the ground. This has been identified as a condition called hematohidrosis, in which capillary blood vessels that feed the sweat gland rupture, causing them to exude blood in conditions of extreme physical or emotional stress.
