In this portrait of a Qing Dynasty princess, she is dressed elaborately, reflecting the wealth and power of the imperial family. Her headdress is beautifully embellished with flowers, intricate embroidery and precious stones. These ornaments are an extension of her regal status. Yet, her stoic and consuming gaze pierces through. Life in the Forbidden City was one filled with political strife and rivalry. Only the strongest with the will to survive could endure.
