Old Katong Red House Bakery II
ERICA WEE
Acrylic on Canvas
(Original, Framed)
91 x 61cm
2024
Housed in a row of old shophouses along East Coast Road, the Katong Red House Bakery was a favourite haunt among many Singaporean East-siders in the 1960s-80s. Known for its old-school sponge cakes, curry puffs and soft swiss rolls, it was also a favourite hangout for local bands during the 1960s.
Using the palette knife technique, the artist skillfully created an impasto-heavy, strongly-textured piece, bringing to life the little stories around this familiar bakery amidst a nostalgic atmosphere of vibrant colors and lively reflections.
At the left side of the painting, the artist incorporated a cobbler from her childhood, as she recalls fondly her memories of squatting next to him, watching him work shoe after shoe. This painting is a sequel to Erica's "Old Katong Red House Bakery", completed in 2018.
