This painting represents Eden, a paradox, a social critique of the human condition amplified by modern culture. The kingfisher owes her majesty not to her own toiling, but to the sovereignty of her Creator. She perches on the lily pad, neither sows nor reaps, nor have storehouse nor barn, but her Creator feeds her. However the saying is true "Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat." The mind wrestles to trust fully in her Creator's provision when there seems none. In such complexity too hard to grasp, she trusts her Creator's promise "I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine."
