REDISCOVER GOD THROUGH ART

In our effort to slow down and search for an artwork's meaning, we train our eyes to become aware of the small details around us. Let us take Consider the Kingfisher as a fine example.

As we pause in time to soak in the painting of the kingfisher, we begin to contemplate the meaning of the masterpiece. Through the kingfisher, I remember the words of Jesus: 

Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

REDISCOVER GOD THROUGH NATURE

This habit of slowing down to observe the beauty in art helps us to slow down to search for beauty in nature and what they tell us about God. That is why the Psalmist sings:

The heavens declare the glory of God;
And the firmament shows His handiwork.
Day unto day utters speech,
And night unto night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech nor language
Where their voice is not heard.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

As we learn to slow down and be still to marvel the messages in art, we soon realise that art stops time. Ever so often we rush from errand to errand with our minds preoccupied with objectives to meet, obstacles to overcome and objections to slowing down. However, when we meet a masterpiece of beauty, we stop. We catch our breath, enter a stillness frozen in time and gaze with wonder. We soak in every fine detail of the artwork and try to  its understand its meaning. This is the magic of art.
