The painting captures a pivotal moment of transformation, showing that what seemed like failure was actually a purposeful turning point.
We often try to navigate life's sharp turns by clinging to our own plans, which leads to mental strain and blurred vision. The work visualises the powerful moment when we stop clinging to control and instead trusts in a greater power, revealing that surrender brings clarity and inner peace.

Like the first sigh after a heavy burden is lifted, this painting conveys a sense of release, It doesn’t depict the fight, but the quiet beauty that settles when the struggle is over. True faith, it suggests, is not fragile hope, but calm endurance through the storm.

When you look back at the difficult times in life, think about the moments that gave you hope and courage. Where did your strength come from?
As we reflect on the source of our resilience, the glimpses of kindness from others and the opportunities that have led us to where we are today, may faith and hope be our anchor in life.

A gift represents a blessing from the giver to the recipient, well-wishes from one to the other.
Guided by divine radiance and fueled by unwavering faith, the Magi presented their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh as an heartfelt expression of their love. In their kneeling, they painted a tableau of devotion, their bodies a silent hymn.

Drawn by a celestial light, wise men traversed the barren sands of the desert, enduring the whims of nature's fury, in pursuit of the Promise. They fixed their eyes upon the brightest and most radiant star in the sky, guiding them on a quest to find the newborn king.

Pain is a universal experience of the human heart. It is mostly unwelcomed because of the hurt and sorrow it brings. Yet, it is pain that teaches us the most important lessons in life. It reminds us of what really matters. This painting is inspired by a moment in life when the artist realised that truth. So, let us not despise the pain of suffering, but open our eyes to see the truth and light that it brings.

A landscape of trees, water and sky is veiled by strokes of dark, grey matter. You are unable to gaze fully at the beauty and wonder of what is before you. The artist draws a parallel between these strokes to the pain and adversities of life that hinder us from seeing the full picture. Have the difficulties of life made you lose sight of the goodness all around you?

The still, quiet river sits between dark and shadowy grassland. Yet, it is also set beneath a softly glowing sunset. The sky is flushed with warm-bodied clouds and hues of cool blue—a picture of rest. As the river winds towards the unknown, it meets with a deeper orange shining from afar. The borders of the river begin to gleam with tints of the same orange, promising light amidst the darkness. Even in the middle of suffering, heartache and disappointment, hope is still alive and reaching out to you today. Never stop walking towards the light.

The road ahead appears clear at first yet gradually diffuses into a distant blur. In this work, Johnrey reflects on his lifelong journey of 'faith' and 'surrender', as he seeks the sometimes elusive and blurry answers to his questions in life.
Often he aches for more answers. Yet, he recognises the importance of surrendering authorship of his life and 'trusting the process' of growth. It is in this process that he is moulded, changed and ultimately seeks deeper answers that are different to when he first began.

What keeps you going?
This work was inspired by artist Johnrey’s recent trip to Milan to visit his parents who are based there for work. While gazing at reflections in a pond at Parco Sempione, a large city park in Milan, he felt drawn to capture the moment. The waters reflect the lush green hues from the plants that surround, illuminated by the afternoon sun that refracts and radiates its light on the pond.
For Johnrey, the sunlight represents the strong current of faith that pierces through life's ups and downs and keeps him going. It is a beating compass, connecting heart, soul and spirit.

This painting is dedicated to the artist’s family in the Philippines, whom he has not seen for a long time. In the heartache and struggle, he realised that proof of love isn’t always in sight. Despite distance, love will always find a way to connect.

Separated families, longing for loved ones, missing home. These were the sad sentiments faced by many, including the artist himself who is an expatriate, during the Covid pandemic. The painting was inspired by the view of a landing airplane, bringing with it the joy and anticipation of being reunited with those who matter.

Artist Profile
Originally hailing from the Philippines, Johnrey Quiban is an architect and mood landscape artist based in Singapore. His emotive canvas explores distant memories and silent feelings often left unexpressed. He is inspired by the stillness of nature and the imperfections of life. While his earlier works were shaped by a longing for home and family,
Johnrey’s recent practice turns towards more introspective questions of direction, purpose and what lies ahead. Through atmospheric landscapes and moments of stillness, he captures the quiet tension between uncertainty and hope.

A meandering road that drifts toward the soft glow of dawn, a quiet journey through mist and muted light.
The artist is reminded that the answer is seldom found on a straight, sunlit path. Rather, it is shaped through patient, steadfast steps taken in the haze of the unknown, trusting that each thread forward brings us closer to where light finally breaks through.
